Online education, also known as distance learning or e-learning, differs from traditional education because students are not required to visit an actual classroom and listen to an instructor face-to-face. The University of London was the first university to offer distance learning degrees.

Most frequently online education seems to be used for web-based distance education. When we talk about distance education we need not concentrate on web education. That is the main differance between these two types of education.

Traditionally, online courses could work no faster than the mail system. Actually things sent by mail are more synonymous with online course. What I understand further is that online courses are done to acquire a certain qualification whereas distance education by electronic media is more flexible towards learner's objective  and may or may not be for award of an added qualification.
And I think it is quite clear from our discussion so far, that online course is oldest form of distance education.

Dear Ulya

Your question about the online education reminded me the online course that will be delivered in Azerbaijan by the British Council and supported by the Ministry of Education in January 2010. This is the first methodological online course for teachers of English in Azerbaijan. You can find more info here http://www.britishcouncil.org/az/azerbaijan-english-teaching-etto.htm

Best wishes,

Gulshan
